The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for national unity, inviting all political parties, alliances, left-right parties, religious-based and Islamic political parties, and organizations participating in the simultaneous movement for a single demand to come together on one platform.
In response to this call, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has already announced its participation in the national unity, and the Grassroots National Party has also welcomed this initiative. Simultaneously, other political parties and alliances involved in the joint movement have expressed their support for this effort. These parties and alliances are stating that there is no alternative to unity among the opposition parties engaged in anti-government movements. They consider this initiative timely and crucial.
Manab Zamin spoke with five top leaders from parties and alliances involved in the simultaneous movement regarding the unity proposal. They informed that the BNP is conveying the message of forming a national unity to the top leaders of parties and alliances in the simultaneous movement. These groups will hold meetings to decide their stance and inform the BNP of their decision. However, most parties have already praised this initiative. It has been learned that contact is also being made with parties and alliances outside the simultaneous movement.
The student movement has now become an expression of overall frustration against the deprivation faced by all disadvantaged people in the country for the past one and a half decades. The BNP, as the people's party, fully supports this struggle to establish the rights of the people of Bangladesh. The BNP expects that all democratic parties in the country will unite in this single-point movement of the people to uphold the ideals of Bangladesh's liberation war.
Last Friday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the formation of a national unity with opposition political parties and organizations demanding the fall of the government. The statement said, "At this critical juncture for the nation, in the greater national interest, to restore plundered democracy and voting rights, and for the liberation of the disenfranchised people and the nation, we are calling for the formation of a national unity based on a minimum single-point demand, inviting all democratic political parties, social and cultural organizations, individuals, and forces in the country to unite." The BNP is calling for national unity among the partner parties and alliances of the simultaneous movement under BNP leadership, all left-right political parties, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other religious-based and all Islamic political parties and organizations. They believe this historic declaration and document of national unity will expedite the liberation of the country and the nation, God willing. The statement mentioned that due to time constraints and communication barriers, consent could be given through statements, and a joint statement with the signatures of all consenting parties would be issued soon.
The LDP has announced its participation in the national unity, responding to the BNP's call and demanding the government's swift resignation. LDP President Colonel (Retd.) Dr. Oli Ahmed said there is no alternative to unity among the opposition parties engaged in anti-government movements. He stated, "We support and applaud the step taken by the BNP to call for unity at this critical time for the country. We are announcing our participation in this united movement."
The Grassroots National Party has also welcomed this initiative by the BNP. In a statement, the party's Chairman Dr. Abdullah Al Naser, Co-Chairman Alhaj Abdul Baten, and Secretary General Syed Shamim Ishtiaq said, "This historic declaration and document of national unity will expedite the liberation of the country and the nation. We are calling on all patriotic people, students, the general public, political parties, teachers, farmers, workers, professionals, journalists, and the hardworking people of the country to unite and engage in an unstoppable struggle to defeat the terrible fascist ruling group and establish a democratic system of governance for the people, in protest against the killings and oppression by the government and in the interest of preserving the country's independence and sovereignty."
Before the 12th National Parliament election, the BNP started a simultaneous movement in July 2023 with various organizations including the Democracy Platform, 12-Party Alliance, Nationalist Like-Minded Alliance, Democratic Left Unity, People's Rights Council, Liberal Democratic Party, Gono Forum, People's Party, Labor Party, NDA, and Student Rights Preservation Council, demanding the fall of the government. However, at that time, Jamaat-e-Islami conducted separate but similar programs for the government's downfall. This time, the BNP has called for national unity including Jamaat-e-Islami and all partner parties, alliances, left-right political parties, religious-based and all Islamic political parties and organizations of the simultaneous movement.
Mostafa Jamal Haider, the leader of the 12-Party Alliance and Chairman of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), told Manab Zamin, "We are already in the process of unity with the BNP. Now it's a matter of seeing how the BNP conducts the national unity process."
Saiful Haque, a top leader of the Democracy Platform and General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, told Manab Zamin, "We believe that the opposition parties are on the streets. There needs to be more unity among these parties. And we are in the simultaneous movement, everyone is playing their role from their respective positions. Strong unity will be built through this movement on the streets.
