On December 22, Abdul Hai Kanu, a central committee member of the Krishak League, was publicly humiliated in Bangladesh’s Comilla district. A crowd garlanded him with shoes in front of Kuliyara Government Primary School in Batisa Union. The incident, captured on video, spread rapidly across social media, sparking widespread outrage.
Following the incident, Kanu claimed to be a freedom fighter and a recipient of the "Bir Protik" title, a prestigious honor for valor in Bangladesh’s Liberation War. His claim, supported by initial media reports (1,2 , 3) led to nationwide indignation over the perceived disrespect to a war hero. Political parties, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, condemned the act, with Jamaat expelling two members allegedly involved.
However, investigations revealed that Kanu’s name does not appear on the official government list of "Bir Protik" honorees. The list, accessible here, confirmed that no such honor was awarded to him. Confusion may have arisen from another Abdul Hai from Kurigram, who genuinely holds the title.
What Led to Kanu’s Public Humiliation?
Police and locals linked the incident to a personal grudge. In 2008, Kanu allegedly assaulted Abdul Halim, a local resident, during a school management committee election, dragging him into a water body to humiliate him publicly. Halim’s recent death reignited old resentments. On December 22, Halim’s brother Abul Hashem, along with others, confronted Kanu at Kuliyara market, forcibly brought him to the school, and subjected him to public humiliation.

Kanu’s reputation as a controversial figure preceded this event. Police records show he faces nine criminal cases, including charges of murder, extortion, and political violence. He has served prison time for these crimes. Residents of Ludiara village in Chauddagram accuse him of exploiting his political connections during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure to establish a reign of terror, using law enforcement to oppress political rivals and extort locals. His alleged actions included driving opponents out of the area and orchestrating acts of violence.
Notably, in 2016, Kanu and his son were implicated in the murder of Abu Bakar Siddique, an Awami League leader, in Ludiara. He is also accused of involvement in the murder of Jubo League leader Shahin. These incidents reportedly forced many locals, including opposition activists, to flee the area. Kanu’s actions even targeted some within his own party, further tarnishing his image.
The humiliation has ignited debate. Critics question why political leaders defend someone with such a controversial past, highlighting the misuse of wartime credentials for impunity.
